Search your type library (or your typeface of choice) for some interesting or inspiring glyphs. After skimming the regular and alternate characters, look at ampersands, signs and symbols, punctuation and accents. Start by either repeating one character or alternating two characters, until you get an interesting pattern or image. Catalogues and specimens dedicated to a unique typeface are the first link between the type designer and potential users of new typefaces. A real tool for graphic designers, to check the style and functionalities of typefaces they may potentially need as part of any new projects.

1. Ludlow Typefaces (The Large Specimen Books) The Ludlow Typograph Company published at least four editions of their big, hardcover specimen book under the title Ludlow Typefaces (in earlier versions with the subtitle "A Specimen Book of Matrix Fonts"). These rather sumptuous large volumes are distinct from the abridged specimen books issued under the title Some Ludlow Typefaces.   Throughout this specimen, Weiss is shown in book pages, advertisements, social announcements and in many sizes and styles. It’s hard for us to appreciate, with our hundreds or thousands of type fonts on our hard drives, just what a new typeface could mean to the printers who had the skill to use it.
